When Phaxsi Coca arrived into this world in her native Bolivia, she was named Jeanette Rojas by her parents. However, as a descendant of a Quechua mother and Aymara father, it didn’t take her long to realise that she deserved a name that better embraced her identity as an ambassador to an Andean worldview. And so, soon after hearing the call of her ancestors, she decided to baptise herself with a name that she felt would lay the foundations for her artistic pursuits and help her in her journey towards her reconstruction of an ancestral past that she felt needed vindicating. Today Jeanette is known to the world as Phaxsi – which in Aymaran means ‘Mother Moon’ – and Coca, in homage to the coca leaf, a plant that has been a sacred symbol for the indigenous Andean cultures for millennia.

Phaxsi has been, from a very young age, a player of traditional woodwind Andean instruments, such as Quenas, Tarkas, Pinquillos and Sikus which, at the time, meant going against popular superstitions that were designed to prevent women from playing them – yet Phaxsi persevered in their study and dissemination throughout the world. She belonged to several musical organisations such as Arawi, a Bolivian Popular Music workshop, Warmi, a collective of Latin American female musicians, Saviar, a Columbian-Bolivian trio and Sikuris sin Frontera, a cultural movement of traditional Latin American music. In 2002 she was part of the renowned group Bolivia and between 2003 & 2008 was a member of established bands on the Bolivian music scene such as Orquesta Musica de Maestros and Bolivian Jazz, both of which were stylistically very different from each other, allowing her to consolidate her adaptability as a session musician, constantly evolving and learning whilst on the regional folk scene. The most spiritual and fitting moment of her career, however, came with the creation of the women’s group Comunidad Sagrada Coca, of which she was a director from the moment of its creation in 2003 until 2008. They would avidly rescue Aymaran and Quechuan music, rediscovering in a positively transgressive way, the role women play in the interpretation of wind instruments.

Based in London since 2008, Phaxsi is currently a founding member of the world music group Lokandes, alongside her husband, the well known and charismatic Kanti Qena. As well as this she has also formed the band ‘Sagrada Familia’ with both Kanti – her partner in both music and life – and their son Raymi who is, at the time of writing only 11 years old. In doing so, her private and public life combine to make up an organic tribute to the cultural empire of which Phaxsi knows she is an heiress, messenger and Queen.

Al momento di affacciarsi al mondo, in Bolivia, Phaxsi Coca fu battezzata dal padre con il nome di Jeanette Rojas. Tuttavia, discendendo da una madre Quechua e da un padre Aymara, in poco tempo si rese conto di meritare un nome che potesse comprendere la sua identità di ambasciatrice della visione del mondo andina. E così, ascoltando il richiamo dei suoi avi, decise di chiamarsi con il nome che secondo lei avrebbe assecondato con maggiore coerenza la sua ricerca artistica e i suoi itinerari verso la ricostruzione di un passato ancestrale che era necessario far valere. Attualmente, Jeanette è conosciuta nel mondo come Phaxsi – che in lingua aymara significa ‘Madre Luna’- e Coca, in omaggio alla foglia di coca, una pianta della sua zona che è il simbolo sacro tradizionale della cultura millenaria dei popoli andini.

Sin da quando era molto giovane, Phaxsi suona gli strumenti a fiato tipici della tradizione andina, come gli aerofoni della famiglia dei Sikus, dei Quenas, dei Pinquillos e dei Tarkas, e andando inoltre contro le superstizioni popolari che volevano le donne lontane da questi strumenti, Phaxsi si è specializzata nel loro studio e nella loro costante divulgazione per tutto il mondo. Ha fatto parte di vari gruppi musicali come il Taller Boliviano de Musica Popular Arawi, del gruppo femminile di musica latinoamericana Warmi, del trio colombiano-boliviano Saviar e del movimento culturale di musica tradizionale Sikuris sin Frontera. Nel 2002 è entrata a far parte del famoso gruppo Bolivia e, tra il 2003 e il 2008, di varie realtà ben consolidate all’interno del panorama musicale boliviano come la Orquesta Musica de Maestros e il Bolivian Jazz, entrambi progetti dallo stile molto diverso tra loro , ma che le hanno permesso di rafforzare la sua capacità di adattamento come ospite musicale, oltre alla sua costante evoluzione e formazione come strumentista facente parte della scena folkloristica locale. Ad ogni modo, il fatto più importante ed eclatante della sua carriera si verificò quando venne creata la band femminile Comunidad Sagrada Coca, per cui ricoprì il ruolo di direttrice, dal momento della sua formazione nel 2003 fino al 2008. Questo gruppo recuperò la musica autoctona Aymara e Quechua con un grande impegno di ricerca, e ridefinì in maniera decisamente trasgressiva il ruolo della donna come suonatrice di strumenti a fiato.

Stabilitasi a Londra dal 2008 fino ad oggi, Phaxsi è attualmente un componente essenziale del gruppo dedicato alla fusione dei suoni del mondo Lokandes, di cui suo marito, il famoso e carismatico Kanti Qena, è a sua volta elemento importantissimo. D’altra parte, insieme al suo compagno di vita e di avventure musicali, Kanti, e a suo figlio Raymi – che mentre questo testo veniva scritto aveva solo undici anni – ha organizzato la band musicale “Sagrada Familia”. La sua vita privata e la sua vita pubblica offrono un omaggio coerente all’impero culturale del quale Phaxsi si considera erede, messaggera e regina.

Phaxsi Coca fue bautizada por sus padres como Jeanette Rojas al momento de llegar al mundo en su Bolivia natal. Sin embargo, siendo descendientes de una madre Quechua y de un padre Aymara, no le tomo mucho darse cuenta que ella merecía un nombre que abrazara su identidad como embajadora de la cosmovisión andina. Por ello, tras escuchar el llamado de sus ancestros, decididió bautizarse a si misma con el nombre que sentía apoyaría con mayor coherencia sus búsquedas artísticas y sus travesias hacia la reconstrucción de un pasado ancestral que requería ser reivindicado. Hoy por hoy Jeanette es conocida en el mundo como Phaxsi -que en el idioma aymara significa ‘Madre Luna’, y Coca, en homenaje a la hoja de coca, una planta de la región que es símbolo sagrado tradicional de la cultura de los pueblos milenarios andinos.

Desde muy joven Phaxsi es intérprete de instrumentos de viento tradicionales andinos, tales como los aerófobos de la familia de los Sikus, Quenas, Pinquillos y Tarkas, e incluso yendo en contra de supersticiones populares que mantenían a las mujeres alejadas de estos instrumentos, Phaxsi se especializó en su estudio y constante divulgación a lo largo y ancho del mundo. Fue parte de varias agrupaciones musicales como el Taller Boliviano de Musica Popular Arawi, del grupo de mujeres de música Latinoamericana Warmi, del trio colombiano-boliviano Saviar y del movimiento cultural de música tradicional Sikuris sin Frontera. En 2002 formó parte del renombrado grupo Bolivia y entre 2003 – 2008 formó parte de instituciones musicales bien establecidas dentro del panorama musical boliviano como la Orquesta Musica de Maestros y Bolivian Jazz, ambos proyectos con estilos muy diferenciados entre sí, que le permitieron consolidar su adaptabilidad como músico invitado, y su evolución y aprendizaje constante como instrumentista de la escena folclórica regional. Sin embargo, el hecho mas trascendental y relevante de su carrera llegó con la creación de la agrupación de mujeres Comunidad Sagrada Coca, de la que fue directora desde su creación en el año 2003 y hasta el 2008. Este agrupación rescató música autóctona Aymara y Quechua con un gran afán investigativo, y replanteó de forma positivamente transgresora el rol de la mujer como intérprete de instrumentos de viento.

Asentada en Londres desde el 2008 y hasta el presente, Phaxsi es hoy por hoy integrante pilar de la agrupación de fusión de sonidos del mundo Lokandes, de la que su esposo, el conocido y carismático Kanti Qena es también integrante esencial. Por otra parte, también junto a su compañero de vida y de aventuras musicales, Kanti, y a su hijo Raymi – quien al momento de escribir este texto tenía solo once años- conforma la agrupación musical ‘Sagrada Familia’. Su vida privada y su vida pública ofrecen un orgánico homenaje al imperio cultural del cual Phaxsi se sabe heredera, mensajera y reina.
