Metralla Rosa con Carla Tofano
It is not by chance that Elena Saraceni’s professional abilities show so much depth in diversity. While she was born in Argentina, she grew up in an ecosystem that was diverse and culturally stimulating. Before moving to London in 2010, Elena spent her formative years moving between Punta del Esta in Uruguay, Buenos Aires, Paris and Caracas. In fact it is probably almost entirely because of this continuous process of having to adapt to her family’s dynamics that her idiosyncratic passions are so astonishingly flexible. And perhaps it is also thanks to this divorce from what most of us consider to be the definition of ‘belonging’ that she related so strongly to the many aspects of contemporary art from such an early age.
Elena’s career in the art world began in 2015 as a Fine Art Consultant and Gallery Manager. She quickly went on to become the Digital Gallery Programme Strategist and head of Gallery Liaison at Artsy, a respected online platform dedicated to the sale of Fine Art. And because this involved the coordination of almost 100 galleries around Europe, India and the United States she gained a strategic understanding of the art market and its protocols, which would have otherwise taken years to learn. She was also involved with the London Collective as a curator for Vortic.art and on top of that had the opportunity to develop initiatives of a humanitarian and environmental nature within the global arts scene through organisations such as Parley Collective, which works towards cleaning the oceans and Reprieve Collective, which works towards human rights.
As far as Art Curation goes though, nothing can compare to the success and satisfaction that Elena found in conceiving and developing Female Voices of Latin America, a virtual exhibition that managed to bring together and celebrate the work of more than 150 living female Latin American artists who were represented by over 60 galleries and museums. This ambitious online exhibition was launched on International Women’s Day – March the 8th 2021 – and became the largest collection of this historically underrepresented group in history. Nineteen countries responded to the initiative, and amongst the galleries and museums to take part were the Museum of Modern Art of Bogotá (MAMBO) in Colombia, the Tamayo Museum in Mexico, and the Museum of Contemporary Art and Design (MADC) in Costa Rica, along with leading commercial galleries such as the Luisa Strina Gallery in Brazil, Casas Riegner in Colombia, A Gentil Carioca in Brazil, as well as galleries that work specifically with emerging artists such as Barro in Argentina, Instituto de Visión in Colombia and Proyectos Ultravioleta in Guatemala.
And, thanks in part to the entirely positive response from the press – not only in Latin America but also globally, with publications such as The Financial Times – you will discover, in this episode of Metralla Rosa, why Female Voices of Latin America was all the confirmation Elena needed in order to know that Art and altruistic visions can go hand in hand.
And now, enjoy the interview!
