Metralla Rosa con Carla Tofano
Enriqueta Ahrensburg is the perfect personification of the artist who exists so immersed in the creation of her work that she is almost entirely detached from what may happen to it once it is released into the world that helped create it. She is an artist who lives, breathes and produces visual experiences, one after the other, with the sole purpose of maintaining her core essence and mental sanity without the need, necessarily, for acclamation or validation from a market that does not always align itself with her process. Living through a moment in history in which we are all reconciling ourselves more than ever with the concept of our existence as a space for evolution and constant transformation rather than a destination full of certainties, it seemed apt and necessary to talk to Enriqueta in order to delve deeper into an artistic practice that is so abundant, intimate, vital and free from labels and market commitments.
Of German descent, Enriqueta was born and raised in Venezuela, where she also trained as an artist. Today she lives in London where, every day of her life, she clings to, and merges with, her unstoppable creative practice. Her painterly language is abstract and expansive. Her large, vivid canvases take you on a journey that is born from chaos, the initial spark of life capable of creating layers of matter that cannot be understood merely as linear or vertical, but should be perceived instead as spirals – layers of painted geology in which matter, like nature, intertwines, meets, manifests and becomes a reality.
And when Enriqueta is not working on these colourful creations, she is using the pseudonym Juana De Monch to create drawings that overflow with symbolic allegories and eclectic mythologies and archetypes. Her drawings symbolically depict the unification of varying visions of a universe in which Tarot, medieval folklore, occultism and metaphysics all come together to create works of art that could so easily be historical illustrations or etchings from an alternate reality. Under the guidance of her alter ego, these magical and almost religious visions appear, become bound to this world and make real one of the more prolific facets of Enriqueta’s creative nature.
This episode of Metralla Rosa is a journey into the inner world of an artist who, despite the obstacles placed in her path by life in the diaspora, inhales inspiration and exhales creativity every single day of her life. This conversation is a journey into the heart of an artist who creates for the same reasons she breathes, and whose visions for both the future of human dynamics and the economy of the art world are highly revolutionary.
