Metralla Rosa con Carla Tofano
The poet, literary critic and anthropologist, Alfredo Chacón, is Metralla Rosa’s very special guest for episode 52. As Carla mentions at the beginning of the interview (which took place in Alfredo’s home in Caracas), this is a conversation that swings from the warmth and spontaneity of an emotional, personal reunion to the journalistic formality of a dedicated in-depth interview. Together, father and daughter unveil visions, memories, ideas and reflections, in order to meet somewhere in the middle of a path that reconstructs Venezuela from the fragments brought to light by the swinging pendulum of the narratives of two different generations.
The calm, deliberate, profound and expansive poetic visions of Alfredo – one of the least pigeonholed thinkers in the cultural history of modern Venezuela – become an ethereal essay in this audiovisual document, perfect for audiences willing to explore the in-between spaces, without being rushed or forced to conclusions. From the days of his childhood in Apure in a hamlet on the banks of the River Meta, to his soon to be published book on the poetry of 1960s Venezuela, via countless formidable literary projects that include innovative political visions, successful cultural projects and personal transformative experiences, Alfredo guides us through the memories of a country that always was, and continues to be, bursting with vibrant possibilities, with his incorruptible commitment to living life as non-negotiable exercise in creation.
This interview is a breath of fresh air, that shows just how important the attitude we have towards events that occur in our lives is, and how our point of view is always something we have complete sovereignty over and which can always be used as an effective form of resistance. At the age of 85, with his extensive list of accomplishments that includes texts on poetry, essays, literary critiques and the directorship of several cultural institutions, Alfredo reveals in this conversation how building a long lasting, creative resolve has more to do with remaining open, flexible and absorbent within yourself than being contained or supported by the institutional scaffolding of the inherent systems. This interview takes us on a stroll through the possibilities that inhabit a genuine commitment to thought, art and culture, enabling us to practice reflecting upon our pleasant reality, with life itself as the undying manifestation of creation.
And now, enjoy the interview!
