Metralla Rosa con Carla Tofano
Pepa Duarte, this episode’s guest, is a maker, creator and doer of all things theatrical, who, with her ability to provoke, and talent for improvisation, is impossible to underestimate. Born in Lima (in the Barranco district), she has lived in London for a number of years – a city from which she creates her uncomfortably reflective, politically divergent, anti-conformist and anti-colonial theatrical experiences.
Pepa is a fascinating storyteller. Her work is infused with critical humour and is an endless source of theatrical experiences that revolve around topics such as migration, feminism, rituals and gender conflicts, whilst creating the necessary spaces for vital cultural dialogue and universal values, such as diversity and anti homologation. Since arriving in London – a city steeped in theatrical history and tradition – for her master’s degree in acting and theatre creation at RADA (Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts), Pepa has made it her base of operations, turning her gaze towards social injustices on a universal scale. One of her most popular characters is Señorita Rita, a charming Latina bio-drag queen, who navigates the United Kingdom with her subversive feminist humour, whilst providing chilling statistics on topics such as femicide, racism and discrimination. Meanwhile, another of her creations, Eating Myself, has completed its second season in London, with excellent reviews from both critics and audiences. As both the writer and actor in this work, Pepa gracefully and accurately examines the alienating relationship that exists between our bodies, our appetites, our gender and the social stigmas linked to food as a symbol of social coercion and status. Eating Myself tackles, in an uncomfortably eloquent way, the contradictorily complex impact nutrition plays in our lives. It is a work that manages to spread a universally relevant message beyond the British theatres, confirming the faith Pepa places in the medium of Theatre as a tool for creative empowerment.
At the time of recording, Pepa was also running Southwark Playhouse’s Young Company, teaching drama classes at The Old Vic Theatre and Tender Charity and was leading courses in Theatre Creation for King’s College, Latin American Women’s Rights Services and Routes, demonstrating her commitment and belief in the inclusive role that theatre can play in the community. From a young age, when Pepa first became involved in the theatre, both as a creator and a teacher, it has been a tool for the exploration and discussion of the social experience, allowing us to laugh, play and dream whilst, at the same time, denouncing, transforming and resisting.
And now, enjoy the interview!

E adesso, godetevi l’intervista!
