This interview was recorded on the 06th of October 2020 and released on the 1st of November 2020

The young Dominican writer, Karlina Veras, is not only recognised for her work as a short story writer but also for her passion for reading and the connections she has helped forge between the Spanish speaking readers in the UK and those who speak both Spanish and English. However, throughout her career, Karlina has also produced and directed short films and video art pieces as well as composed classical and electronic musical pieces, all thanks to her constant need to satisfy the depths of her inner drive.

Karlina originally came to London in 2006 to study music and, while training as a composer at the London Centre of Contemporary Music, she discovered that her passion for reading and writing took more and more space and prominence in her life. Until, in 2017, she received an invitation to include her story ‘La Victoria’ in Otras Vidas Posibles (Other Possible Lives),  a Spanish anthology of short stories curated by the Dominican writer Carlos Fonseca and published by Battersea Spanish Press in London. Spurred on by this first success, Karlina immediately started work on the publication of her first book: a collection of short stories entitled Yun Yun (Pa’ la Calor) that saw the light of day in 2018 and, although self published, has been exceptionally well received in cities around the world, including Santo Domingo, New York and London.

Karlina’s literary voice is a voice full of freshness, family memories, tropical warmth, urban nostalgia and picturesque rurality. She is a down to earth writer, friendly, happy, serene, and a passionate storyteller who expresses herself from a point of artistic abundance rather than philosophical shallowness. Having her as a guest on Metralla Rosa was extremely comforting and positive because, as well as everything else, Karlina represents a generation who knows that one of the most effective ways to give a community its voice is by raising your own voice and infecting everyone with tales of life that overflow with positivity and joy.
