This interview was recorded on the 10th of February 2022 and released on the 1st of April 2022

Javier Weyler – an exceptional drummer, music producer, sound designer and social communicator – was born in Argentina and raised in Venezuela where, in 90s Caracas he began his musical career with his band Claroscuro. After considerable success on the Caracas rock scene and having graduated university in Media Studies, Javier decided to move to London to train as a sound engineer. Shortly after starting work as a studio assistant, he was presented with his biggest opportunity to date – to become the drummer of Stereophonics, one of the most consistent and respected bands on the British rock scene.

Between 2004 & 2012 Javier conquered the world’s stages with his talent and charisma, whilst touring the world with Stereophonics, a band who have supported legends like The Rolling Stones and Oasis and released 7 number one albums in the UK charts. As a drummer, Javier is metronomic, graceful, precise and powerful, however his artistic ambitions have not allowed him the luxury of merely being a run-of-the-mill musician. His artistic interests have led to him explore the road less travelled, allowing him to constantly reinvent himself creatively and musically, from a multitude of perspectives. Whether as a composer, in charge of a mixing desk, in front of a computer or armed with a set of drumsticks, Javier always manages to move like a fish in water, constantly standing out from the crowd and provoking admiration.

Without coming up for air, he also composed and recorded the album ‘Lágrima’ under the pseudonym of Capitan Melao, while still on tour with Stereophonics. Released in 2007, it was his first solo work and consisted of tracks that were personally poetic and lyrically musical, allowing him to not only reconnect with his Spanish roots but to also collaborate with musicians such as Phil Manzanera, the guitarist from Roxy Music, and Natalia Lafourcade, one of the most recognisable female singers on the Mexican indie scene. Javier has not stopped evolving as a musician and creator of sounds since his arrival in London in 2001, with his Sound Design Master Classes a success around the world, including in the musical capital of Buenos Aires. He has also composed and produced the soundtracks of the films El Yaque, Pueblo de Campeones (2012) and Maradona en México (2020). On top of this, Javier currently manages, with a group of London based engineers and musicians, 5dB Media, a unique studio space, both in how it is run and in what it offers. It was created not only with the intention of bringing musicians into a space in which they can collaborate and experiment with cutting edge technology, a multitude of instruments and vintage recording equipment, but also with the idea of forming a hub that is accessible to many rather than a privilege for the few.

In this interview, Javier takes us on a vertiginous tour of his exciting career and, without holding back on controversial opinions about the music industry, he also offers us a refreshing and optimistic vision of music, life and art that we, as members of society, have a duty to believe in and to help create.

And now, enjoy the interview!
