It is no secret that, in recent years, the world of the arts has been moving with an increased determination away from traditional settings and towards more virtual worlds. Musicians, actors, dancers, performers, poets, writers and visual artists have begun to explore the infinite potential of global digital communications, knowing that they offer new and expressive dynamics, new languages, new meeting places and countless new and fascinating questions. For this – and for many other reasons – it was essential to us to welcome 2021 in with a luxurious digital artist, who can shed a light on those things that we are still not seeing as clearly as we should. Gorka Cortázar, our guest for this episode of Metralla Rosa, is an expert in bringing to life ideas that are seemingly impossible at first glance. He is a pragmatic and visionary artist in equal measure, capable of stepping outside the box in order to create ingenious digital solutions that help dreams come true.
Accustomed to working in a team and taking on large-scale international projects, Gorka has recently begun concentrating on creating both public and private spaces in which he alters people’s perception of reality, thanks to the magical effect that lighting can have on these spaces. We all know that reality is nothing more than an accumulation of preconditioned ways of perceiving and, if we use this as a starting point, we can see that all those alterations to reality that are allowing us to expand the frontiers of our senses are not only absolutely legitimate, they are also helping us develop towards a level of consciousness that is hopefully patiently waiting for every one of us, just around the corner.
Gorka is an artist who strives to create real and virtual spaces in which reality can meet the virtual, creating a consistent yet conceptually defiant narrative. An artist who, despite having many years of experience in bringing large scale architectural projects and collaborations to life has, in 2020 – in the midst of a pandemic, during which all production companies have been in recession mode – decided to strive towards the conquest of new markets, with the creation of two ambitious new initiatives for digital expansion and research: Protean Powerhouse and Tecné Collective.
We can all agree that Digital Art is, in essence conceptual, universal, progressive and futuristic, however, if ‘the medium is the message’, as the communications theorist Marshall McLuhan said, how will the approaching technological progress affect the way in which we see ourselves and the way in which we tell our stories?
The role of digital art is not to question the possible, but to challenge the impossible – that is why we invite you to come and enjoy this conversation with Gorka Cortázar, an artist you should not let out of your sight if the future of the arts and communication intrigues you.
And now, enjoy the interview!
