Las vidas secretas de este vestido

The secret lives of a dress

As with all fateful events and moments, this dress entered my life in all its glory during an ordinary working afternoon.
In this era where digital information is relentlessly available, my phone feeds my frustration, providing images that are sometimes, frankly, overwhelming and with no care or concern for whether I am in the right place to receive them.

During a brief break in one of my endless afternoons of life painting classes for which I was modelling, I managed a quick glance at my mobile’s small display and saw a beautiful black dress. It had a long, winding shape, a haughty collar and endless sleeves. It was elegantly dark with just a touch of Gothic. I thought: “That’ s a wonderful dress!”.
I have, however, over the past few years learned to appreciate a thing of beauty, without necessarily feeling the need to own it. My exclamation was therefore devoid of any expectation or attachment.

Seconds later I turned away from my prosthetic screen and, as though emerging from a tunnel to walk into a cave, I once again became, and remained in, absolute silence. Completely still, in a pose, I returned to my work and forgot about the dress.

I had to wait another twenty minutes until my next break during which, naturally, I buried my ostrich head back into my phone, thirsty for more external inspiration. This time, I once again received proof that there is no such thing as coincidence in life.

After my moment of yearning and deep appreciation of that black dress, which I had let go of twenty minutes earlier, a message appeared before me that put it firmly back in my sights. The human being I love with all my heart, and with whom I wake up every morning, sent me a picture, that appeared in my private inbox, of that very dress, accompanied by the words “This would look amazing on you!”.

The comment made me smile. In fact, unable or unwilling to control it, I became the smile. My aura smiled and my thoughts smiled. Should I be surprised by this coincidence? Perhaps I should be. But no, it didn’t surprise me one bit.

That said, coincidences have always surprised me on a rational level – or I wouldn’t remember them – but on a more visceral level, they barely cause a stir.

I believe in all-powerful connections, unions that feel like alchemical experiments. I believe in a happy fusion of wonderful intents, and I believe in the endless interweaving of what we become when we love one another. I am fully aware that everything is beautifully connected. Synchronised revelations feel just as right as they do necessary.

Several days later the dress, that I hadn’t even had time to deliberately wish for, once again appeared on my mobile phone, the result of some calculated, secretive actions carried out by my favourite human being. Unexpectedly – as tends to be with all the best gifts – I received a friendly message from the dress’ designer, Magdalene Celeste. She told me we should arrange a convenient date to meet at her house, in order to tailor the dress I had been gifted to my measurements!

So to the first of the fateful moments in this story: Going to the North London home of my gift’s designer and magician, on a very dark winter’s afternoon, for her to feel the pulse of my body’s curves. Amongst gin and tonics, measuring tapes, thimbles, pins and playful, light-hearted conversations, I had my first close encounter with an experience that has been absolutely unprecedented for me since I moved to London.

The second moment was me, smiling again, looking at myself in the mirror whilst wearing a long, elegant, and partially assembled dress that was being temporarily held together by pins that neither I nor the mirror could see. Beyond moral concerns or false modesty, I felt like a seductive, wicked lead character in a tale of overwhelming cruelty.

Yet it was receiving the dress weeks later, wrapped in golden tissue paper, that truly conveyed to me that a love story was about to begin. A story that took root as I packed the dress, still wrapped in its golden paper cage, into a little suitcase ready to travel with me to Italy.

It was only when I saw it photographed, running downhill, draped over my body on a long avenue lined with towering cypresses, that I understood how the purity of an image can lie within the poetry of actions that re-enact it, giving it silent support. These actions quietly breathe themselves into unspoken events, and always reveal themselves in the final result.

No landscape, however beautiful, no body, however graceful, no dress, however gorgeous, can compete with the energy that is created by the desire to give happiness. Only a luscious, generous impulse can unleash a sequence of postcards that live on, tattooed in the photographic memory of a heart.

As I ran to Toby, my favourite human being, the eye behind the camera that captured this beautiful photo, the culmination and preamble to this text, I hadn’t realised that I was running from my past wounds. I was merely running to embrace him within an endless sky of perpetual gratitude, clad in a long, liberating dress as black as a raven’s wing.
