Metralla Rosa con Carla Tofano
Metralla Rosa’s guest for episode 55 is the musician, singer and cultural activist, Juan David Chacón, better known as OneChot. This interview was recorded in Venezuela, on the banks of the River Choroní – one of the artist’s favourite creative sanctuaries – and shows first hand how important it is to embrace debate within our lives, especially within our most endearing, familial relationships. Carla and OneChot are related both by blood and paths trodden, united by their creative visions, memories of a beloved Venezuela and thoughts on life and art – all of which they share in this fluid coming together of opinions.
In this delicious, flowing conversation above the banks of the river, whose sweet waters provide a musical background throughout the interview, OneChot turns back time and returns to his musical roots with memories of his teachers and his first bands, Negus Nagast and Papashanty, both of which played important roles in the development of the contemporary urban sounds of the region. We also bond over the abundance of anecdotes that cover his far from modest discography as a solo artist, his book Reggae y Rastafari: Dos formas de entender el Caribe (Reggae and Rastafari: Two ways of understanding the Caribbean) and his current global radio programme, Caribbean Flow, which is broadcast online by both Radio Caribe – the official station of the Venezuelan diaspora – and PelaGatos – the Argentine platform with the largest Spanish speaking audience for Afro-Caribbean music. Carla and OneChot also discuss the loss of innocence in a city like Caracas, a city that, shortly after having turned his song, Rotten Town, into a hit, forced our guest to pay the highest price possible for the privilege of speaking out.
Committed to the transformation and liberation of Venezuela – a country that is going through a seemingly endless political crisis – as well as the dissemination the Rastafari cultural and spiritual paradigm, OneChot celebrated the 25 years of his artistic career with a concert supporting resistance and social change, held in his native Caracas – a city that continues to be the natural focus of his emphatic musical experimentations. As a survivor of the violence of Caracas in the early 2000s, OneChot tells us how not even being shot in the head has weakened the unwavering loyalty he feels towards the Venezuelan people, who deserve artists capable of planting the seeds for a future beyond the frustrations and hopelessness that most cannot help but see.
In this relaxed, loving, intimate and heartfelt conversation, OneChot delights us with his pacifist worldviews on art and life and invites us to bask in warmth of the tones and rhythms of his spoken word, as it flows through us. Thanks to this interview, we are called to honour the peace and hope Juan David preaches, every day, through the life he lives.
And now, enjoy the interview!
